When you bust, you have exceeded 21 in your hand and have lost. When this occurs, the dealer wins your bet. If your hand ends with an ace and a card with a 10 value, you have hit Blackjack and won. The payout will be 3:2 and you have hit big. If neither you nor the dealer reaches 21, the hand that values the most is the winner and you will win even money. If you and the dealer get the same hand value, it is a push and you both basically get your money back.
In the event that the dealer begins with the ace as the up card, he or she will allow you to opt for insurance on your hand to avoid losing in the event the dealer hits a Blackjack. Insuring your cards is like insuring your car. If a driver hits your car, you get paid to reimburse the damage. If the dealer hits Blackjack, you win 2:1 with the dealer (or driver in a car accident) assuming responsibility for your damages.
